As more and more of our area small businesses start to leverage the power of social media to develop relationships with potential customers, learning how to use it effectively is critical.  Today, Juliana Crawley a local social media marketer with Goodfella Studios shares her thoughts about building relationships online.

Juliana Crawley GoodfellaBuild Relationships with Your Followers by Juliana Crawley, Goodfella Studios

Are you getting lost in the desire for a new follower/fan on your Social Media platform? It is definitely important to have people out there with some interest in what is you post, but it is also important to engage them after you have their attention.

The point is not to collect followers/fans, but the instead connect and build relationships with the people on the other end. When these relationships start to form, great things happen. If your purpose is to grow your business by getting more clients, then it is important to relate to them on a personal and emotional level.

You can begin by engaging your fans. Engagement is a way of interacting with your followers to keep them intrigued by your message. I like to post inspirational quotes, share other’s posts, ask questions, and offer contests. You can also comment on posts, share tips and any information that you deem valuable. The goal is to create conversations with your audience and to get to a level of engagement. You want your prospects and clients have potential to become your advocates and share your posts on their social networks.

Not all small business owners who see the potential of reaching clients through Social Media. But those of us that do, should NOT try to sell their product/service, but instead offer value. You can do this by giving away a FREE gift, answering questions that your followers/fans ask. This interaction strengthens your potential bond and lets them know you care about their thoughts and concerns. Be sure to share information that is relevant to your topic of interest and be sure to introduce people in your network to each other. This encourages followers/fans to help each other and that’s really the most important thing.

When sharing, one way to approach your audience is through your story. This allows you to show the reader that your content is relevant to their joy, their struggles and their pain. By tapping into the emotions of your audience, you are able to connect with them on a deeper level. For instance, if you sell an anti-aging cream, you can show before and after pictures and share testimonials. Remember that the goal is to connect with your followers/fans, thereby enabling you to have a more meaningful social media conversation.

You don’t have to be a professional writer or blogger to engage, offer value and share your story with your followers/fans. The most important thing is to interact regularly and with sincerity.

Thanks Juliana for a great article.

Balancing Content with Design for an Optimized WebsiteBalance web design and content

Here at the ASU Small Business and Technology Development Center we have been having a great time over the past few weeks teaching our “Website in a Day with Weebly” workshops around Northeast Arkansas.  Small business owners in Pocahontas, Newport, and Wynne have attended and we have had great responses.  More coming so stay tuned to our Small Business Training Calendar for workshops near you!  For a number of our participants finding the right balance between optimizing for “search-bots” versus the human eye is a challenge.  So I thought I would share these observations (and a great video from Eric Spellmann) with our readers.

Website Design Challenge

To get the most out of a website today it is important to find a balance between making your website searchable by web crawlers for search engine optimization AND a well designed site to keep visitors engaged.

Ranking well on search engines does you no good if your design does not grab the visitor once he lands on your page and encourages him to stay to visit other pages, watch your videos, or fill out your forms.

In other words you must find a good balance between “feeding” the spider-bots for SEO (search engine optimization) and “feeding” the human visitor for HEO (human eye optimization).

web design for small businessesBoth are critical to get the most out of your new website.

But… is one more important than the other? If so which one? And, what are your options?

Search Engine Optimization

Since “experts” in web design and SEO spend their entire careers trying to answer this question I thought it would be best for our readers to hear (and see) what one expert has to say.

Below is a short video (5 minutes) by Eric Spellmann, with Spellmann and Associates, a web design and Internet marketing firm out of Amarillo, Texas that is worth watching.

I met Eric at a national association meeting several years ago and have been following his on-line tips ever since. The video below was posted last week and does a great job of explaining the balance between content and design.

One important piece to remember is that search engines, especially Google, are constantly tweaking the algorithm or mathematical formula to make search more efficient.

Sometimes it is a major overhaul which means you need to stay “in the loop” on changes how it will impact your search performance.

Spellmann’s blog is a good resource that is worth adding to your RSS feed to stay informed and be an effective online marketer.
